NSSFM accomplishments and events for 2009 and 2010:
 
  • Film Florida has selected Richard Norman to be honored with their Film Legends Award to be presented at their annual meeting, July 2010.The location at Jacksonville Beach TBA.
  • In conjunction with NSSFM, Arts Institute of Jacksonville has produced First Coast Flickers: Celebrating Jacksonville’s Silent Film Heyday, a 30-minute documentary examining Northeast Florida’s film history. Nearing completion, the 30-minute documentary was produced by students and staff of the Arts Institute of Jacksonville and will premiere locally Spring, 2010. NSSFM will market it for airing regionally and possibly nationally.
  • Jacksonville Scene has selected the Norman Studios Silent Film Museum as recipient of its next annual benefit gala.
  •  Invited to screenThe Flying Ace at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, July 2010
  • Working with Stage Aurora Theatrical Co. (www.stageaurora.org), a Jacksonville stage performance company, to produce a play about the life of Richard Norman and his friendship with Oscar Micheaux.
  •  Working with filmmaker and Board of Advisors Member Nadia Ramoutar to develop a treatment for a feature film that tells the story of Richard Norman and his relationship with Oscar Micheaux.
  •  Granted permission to use The Bull-DoggerTreme, which follows several musicians struggling with life after Hurricane Katrina. poster to HBO in new dramatic series
  •  Working with descendants of Bill Pickett, legendary rodeo performer and star of The Bull Dogger, to produce a documentary on his life, focusing on his work in Norman films.
  • Invited to screen The Flying Ace at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in July as part of an academic symposium on the history of black aviators. This event will help raise funds to digitally restore the six-reel master of The Flying Ace held at the Library of Congress.
  •  Working with Vox Lumiere (www.voxlumiere) and the Times Union Center for the Performing Arts to bring a series of performances to Jacksonville as a major fundraiser. Vox Lumiere is an internationally touring stage performance company that creates multi-media shows featuring music, dance and laser light shows backed by a silent film projected on huge screens. This benefit will  provide a number of tickets free of charge to local low income youth.
  • Provided a clip of The Flying Ace to be used in the Sept. 11 episode ofForensic Files, which airs nationwide on Tru TV (formerly Court TV).
  • Working with Separate Cinema (www.separatecinema.com) to create a poster exhibit, potentially for installation at the Jacksonville International Airport. The Separate Cinema Archive is an internationally respected collection of more than 25,000 rare film posters, lobby cards and photographs from 30 countries chronicling the black film industry.
  • Screened The Flying Ace at the Lincoln Center in New York by invitation of the Film Society at Lincoln Center and Columbia University School of the Arts. This special screening was part of a conference and film series titled Faded Glory: Oscar Micheaux and Pre-War Black Cinema. Febrary2009
  • Began participation in the Champion Zone project, a collaborative initiative designed to build the capacity of nonprofits and faith-based organizations serving the 32211 zip code. The project, in cooperation with United Way of Northeast Florida, The Community Foundation, Duval County Public Schools and Jacksonville Children’s Commission, the project seeks to enhance the quality of life and improve student achievement in the area.
  • Collaboration with the Jacksonville Film Festival for a day-long event highlighting African American film history. The event to include  a screening of In the Shadows of Hollywood,” a documentary about race films and several vintage films; screenings of several vintage black films; an expert forum; and a vintage black film poster and literature display.
  •  Preliminary agreement with prominent musician Donald Sosin to conduct silent film scoring workshops for Jacksonville students.
  •  Invitation to hold fundraising event at Autry National Center of the American West in Los Angeles.  (Postponed until  City grants NSSFM authority as Norman Studios manager)
  • Invitation to speak at University of Miami Film History program.   Board Advisor Dr. Carolyn Williams represented NSSFM.
  • Launched new website, www.NormanStudiosSFM.org and created sites on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, all designed to drive web traffic to the official website.
  • Developed a formal business plan.
  • Developed a short-term and long-term finance plan.
